Metropolitan Golf Club - Oakleigh South 3167
The City of Monash is paradise for Golfers because it contains some of Melbourne's best Golf Clubs. The Metropolitan Golf Club is a world renown golf course located in Oakleigh South, approximately 20 minutes from Melbourne CBD It was voted No.13 in the Golf Digest list of the best Golf Clubs in Australia in 2017. It is one of Melbourne’s famous sandbelt courses. These courses enjoy sandy soil which makes them drain very quickly and allow golf course designers advantages in creating bunkers, which can be cut right into the greens, something that cannot be done in courses with other soil characteristics.
The Metropolitan Golf course has staged the most prestigious Australian Golf tournaments including The Australian Open, The Australian PGA Championship and the Australian masters, as well as a plethora of Victorian and major amateur championships. The most recent occasion Metropolitan hosted the Australian Open was in 1997. It also hosted the World Matchplay Championships in 2001. The club is scheduled to host the Golf World Cup in 2018.
The club was originally designed by VIC – J.B. MacKenzie in 1906. It was later improved by Dick Wilson in 1959 and had it’s final modifications and improvements made by Michael Clayton & Michael Cocking between 2005-2014.
Metropolitan is famous for it’s couch grass fairways, which Greg Norman is quoted as saying “are the best I have played on anywhere in the world.” The greens are also notoriously fast and there are a staggering 103 bunkers on the course.
Metropolitan is a private golf course so casual golfers cannot easily obtain access to the course. The club does allow access for corporate golf days and members can invite visitors.
