Essendon, Melbourne, Victoria, 3040

Smart Cleaning Solutions CEO Nicholas Pastras is writing a series of articles previewing some of the most interesting places to visit in Melbourne, and in this article he writes about Essendon, home of the Essendon Football Club the major aviation centers in Melbourne.

Essendon is a suburb of Melbourne 12 km north-west of the CBD in the City of Moonee Valley. Essendon is probably most famous for two things, the Essendon Football Club and Essendon Airport, now called Essendon Fields Airport, which is an Airport serving smaller regional centres, private, emergency services as well as corporate airlines needs. It is only 10 minutes from the city CBD (depending on traffic).

With the Essendon Fields Airport facility there are a number of private aviation and Helicopter services based in Essendon, including Heli Experiences, Melbourne Helicopters PTY ltd, Point Helicopters, Amber Aviation, Sports Jet Charters, Austjet Aviation Group  and Air Adventure Australia.

Essendon is also home to one of the best supported AFL clubs in Australia, The Essendon Football Club, and it’s training facilities were for many years at the Essendon Recreational Reserve, (formerly known as Windy Hill) where the Essendon Football Club played it’s home matches from 1922 to 1991.

In 2010, the Essendon Football Club upgraded to its training facilities, and developed and new football facility in the suburb of Melbourne Airport. Essendon still maintains an association with Windy Hill, the club plays it's home matches for its AFL reserves side in the Victorian Football League (VFL), and also maintains a social club and merchandise store on site, which is also now home to the Windy Hill Fitness Centre.

Essendon is primarily a suburban, residential area and has a number of nice parks, including Woodlands Park, Riverside Park and Montgomery Park.
